The Doggy Handbook: The Bare Necessities

In your home, there are a few basic things that you are going to need for your dog. Without these items, you won’t have the right tools to not only care for your pooch, but also to train them. At Philomena London, we strive to provide as many products as possible to make your dog feel right at home. In the Doggy Handbook series, we will be looking at some fantastic training tips, the essential products, and also some great guides on activities and days out that are completely dog friendly. This first chapter will take a look at some of the basic items you need for your dog.

Food and Water

Of course, every dog needs food and water – but they also need a bowl for each as well. There are so many different bowls to choose from, as well as a wide price range so you don’t need to feel pressured into spending a fortune. We have bowls ranging from £4 to £60, so make sure to check out the section on our website here.

We also have a great range of food and treats from the Natural Dog Food Company, which is made from completely natural ingredients for a better and healthier food. Plus, dogs absolutely love it. Make sure you stock up on the treats – they will be essential for training!

Sleep

Every dog needs a comfy bed to sleep on. After all, chasing rabbits all afternoon and playing with friends can be exhausting work. So when the day comes to an end and it’s time to settle down, dogs want somewhere soft and warm to curl up for the night. We have a fantastic range of dog beds available from Charley Chau and John Whitaker, so that your canine companions can have sweet dreams and a comfy rest. Check out our selection here.

Walk

The dog walk is the part of the day every pooch looks forward to the most. When out on the field or in the dog park, they want to look their best, and what better way to express that than with a fantastic new collar and lead? We have an absolutely amazing range of collars and leads available from a range of designers – including us!

If you are looking for something low cost but with amazing designs, then Sweetpea and Boo are the ones you should look at. On the other end of the spectrum, you can take a look at our own line of collars with Charlotte Dujardin that are made from soft English leather. Plus, we have everything in between, with brands like Pioneros and Simba Jones. Take a look at our entire range here.

Play

Toys are so important to dogs, both as a form of entertainment but also distraction. We have a great range of Beco toys available, which are made from all natural material and also incredibly durable. The plush toys are double stitched and we have a great character selection, as well as three sizes so that every dog can have one. The rubber bones and balls are really tough, perfect for dogs who like to have a good chew. Plus, the fact that they are all natural means that if they tear a chunk off of one of the bones there is a lot less panic is it ends up being swallowed.

Poop

Every dog needs to poop on a walk, and often people are reluctant to clean it up because of the impact on the environment that plastic bags have. Well, we have the answer to your concerns in the form of the Beco eco-friendly poop bags.

It only takes a matter of weeks for these to start decomposing and they are 100% biodegradable, so there are no negative effects on the environment. Plus, they come in two sizes – so the bigger dogs are accommodated for. At an affordable price and with the option to buy an eco-friendly poop bag holder, these are a great buy and essential for any dog walk. Take a look here.

To Conclude

At Philomena London, we aim to provide everything we can for your canine companion. We know they are important to you, and so we always ensure that our products are the best possible quality. Hopefully this guide has given you some insight into the basic items you need for your dog, especially if you are about to rescue one or buy a puppy. With so much to offer, we’d love for you to visit our website and check out some of our great doggy products.

5 Great Places to Walk Your Dog: Herefordshire

Here we come again with more dog walks for you and your best friend to take. Hopefully you enjoyed your long weekend, and some equally long walks with it! This week we’re taking a trip to Herefordshire where we will present you all with another five excellent walking spots. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a great new place to walk!

1. Amwell Nature Reserve

Amwell Nature Reserve

If there is one thing I can say about this walk, it’s that it’s beautiful. Wide open spaces and a little bubbling stream make this picturesque walk almost to good to be true. Your dog is sure to love this adventure, and you are definitely going to enjoy the peaceful aura that accompanies this delightful route. With all these spaces to run an frolic, why not nip over to our website and grab a ball or two to keep your dog entertained?

2. May Hill

May Hill

A favourite with many walkers in the county, this large open grassland is perfect for the warm Spring days that we are both currently enjoying, and will continue to do so until Summer. Another relaxing walk, this route has something else to offer on top of it – spectacular views. You can see across the Severn Plain, and it is a truly wonderful sight. For those of you who appreciate excellent scenery while walking, this is certainly the route to take and you likely won’t be regretting it. Bring a ball for a few light games of fetch and take some time to enjoy yourself while your dog explores and has an equally great time.

3. Brockhampton Estate

Brockhampton Estate

Ancient woodland is the star of this walk, and the romantic setting is just the icing on the cake. Of course, the use of romantic here can be taken in both senses of the word, and it certainly fits both the emotion and the style. Situated by a quaint medieval cottage this historical walk is sure to be enjoyed by both you and your furry friend. Ruins and wooden sculptures are just the beginning of this wild adventure, and the sights are sure to fill you with awe. If you are the quiet type of walker, you may be lucky enough to see some of the wildlife in the area. Of course, with all your adventuring you’re sure to get hungry and thirsty before long – be sure to visit the cafe on site to refresh yourself (and your dog) before the journey home.

4. Bodenham

Bodenham

This circular route takes your around the lovely little town of Bodenham. The route is not too long, but long enough to have your dog feeling a bit worn out after. There is a road for part of the walk, so do be sure to put your dog on the lead for that part! The town itself is quite lovely, and the walk will lead you past and through many interesting sites, from churches to an Iron Age hill fort. The historian dog walker is sure to love this one, as is their dog.  With a beautiful lake, and a little nature reserve to walk through, if you’re looking for a walk that isn’t too strenuous with an element of lead walking then this is the one for you. It goes without saying that you should  be sure to check of the local pubs and inns on your travels across the town – you and your dog will surely be in need of a beverage!

5. Shobdon Circular Walk

Shobdon

This circular walk is quite long and is filled with all sorts of interesting things for your dog. The mixed tree woodland is a lovely sight, and one that you will both enjoy travelling through. With steep slopes to climb up, this walk is sure to be a good one for those of you who enjoy a slightly challenging walk. These walks are always great though, as they provide excellent exercise for you and your dog. This loop will lead you all over the place, from wood to field, to hill, and by the end of it you and your dog will be ready to snuggle up in one of our lovely dog beds for a well deserved rest – after a quick stop at the pub of course!

Thank you for a reading another week of walks, and we hope that you are able to find a great new place to walk. Next week we will be visiting Aberdeenshire, so be sure to check back in for more areas to look at and hopefully visit!

3 Luxury Blankets Your Dog Will Love

At Philomena London we pride ourselves on providing the best for your dog. In this installment of our blog we will be presenting 3 luxury blankets your dog will love. After all, they deserve the best don’t they?

1. Charley Chau Double Fleece Dog Blanket (£38)

Everydog deserves to be warm and snuggly, and with this fleece blanket they will be! Available in medium and large, there’s no reason for your dog not to love this. The great thing about this blanket is that it’s easy to wash (especially when you have muddy dogs like ours) and they’re great on the floor, in the car, or protecting the couch from doggy paws. Available also in charcoal and oyster.

2. Charley Chau Faux Fur Blankets (£60-70)

These blankets have to be some of our most popular. These faux fur blankets are actually made from the same material as throws for humans, and I can confirm they are just as soft! You might even find yourself stealing this from your furry friend from time to time! Machine washable, and so easier to clean than most furry blankets, these faux fur blankets are sure to offer your dog comfort and style. Available in charcoal, foxy, oatmeal, silver fox, and snow leopard.

3. Charley Chau Faux Fur Fleece Comforter (£38-55)

These beds are cute and comfortable, something that we’re sure all dogs will love. They have a multitude of uses as a blanket, bed liner, on the sofa, in the back of the car, as a travel mat…and that’s just to name a few. They’re not always apparent as dog beds, and so if you’re like us and use them when guests come over, we have found they’ve never noticed that they are dog beds before! Like all Charley Chau products, these are made with love and care, and they’re incredibly soft and comfortable. Your dog deserves the best, and these certainly are!

Thanks for reading, and we hope that you were able to find a blanket for your dog, or perhaps piqued you interest about what we stock here at Philomena London. Want to check out the website? Click here and feel free to have a browse. Be sure to check in next time and see what we have to offer!

5 Great Places to Walk Your Dog: Cornwall

Here is another Friday of the great places to walk your dog across the country. This week we’re taking a look at the beautiful Cornwall and all the lovely places you and your dog can go for a pleasant stroll. I’m pretty sure you’ll find a place to walk this week!

1. Cardinham Woods

Cardinham Woods

The first place I’m showing you this week is very friendly towards those of you who need a more accessible place to walk. There’s a lovely little cafe at the beginning of the route – either before you begin your adventure or for refreshment afterwards. There are several routes you can take through this lovely woodland, all of which are very much accessible. With one of the routes taking you past a little river, this place is sure to be a great day out for you and your dog.

2. Newbridge River

Newbridge River

This riverside walk is just what you need if you prefer those long, peaceful strolls. With several routes that all take different amounts of time, this walk is sure to leave you feeling refreshed and to make you want to come back again! After all, woodland and water are a great combination for dogs. For the historian dog walkers, a steep hill along one of the routes does lead to an old fort, and so that might be something to keep an eye out for. Make sure to keep your dog on a lead through the fields leading up to it.

3. Watergate Bay

Watergate Bay

Where would a post on Cornwall dog walks be without mentioning the beach walks? Well, the next three are all about them! Watergate Bay covers a two mile stretch of sandy beach, and is just a wonderful walk. Be warned that is it popular with surfers, but I’m sure they won’t be a distraction to your furry friend. There’s a beach cafe that allows dogs and serves local, fresh food every day. It’s certainly worth checking out.

4. Porthustock

Porthustock

This stone beach is a great place for one of those rare relaxing beach walks. It’s not a very busy one, mostly because it’s about a mile away from the nearest town, but in many ways that’s nice because it really gives the dogs a chance to get out and explore. The walk might not necessarily be a long one, but the sniffing and exploration for the dogs is really worth it. They can get their feet wet in the sea and experience new smells and sounds. What could be more peaceful?

5. Porth Kidney

Porth Kidney

This beach walk is truly great. You can get to the sand at high or low tide, but of course the low tide offers more sand and beach for constant running and swimming. The sand seems to go on endlessly, and if you really want to tire your dog out then this is the place! It’s not particularly busy at any point in the year, and there are even sand dunes for you and your dog to climb and explore. As far as active beach walks go this is the one you should go on.

After all that excitement, your dog is sure to need a rest, so why not check out our luxurious pet beds? Click here and take a look – after all, your dog deserves to be comfortable. Next week we will be taking a look at the West Midlands, so check back for more 5 great places to walk your dog!
